Where to get help

Life can be tough, and sometimes the challenges we face can become overwhelming, especially if there are many or they persist over time. At difficult times we may need support, so remember it’s okay to ask for help. If you need help, here’s a list of resources available to you.

Australia+

Emergency Medical Services — 000

If the situation is potentially life-threatening, get immediate emergency assistance by calling 000, available 24 hours a day.

Al-Anon Family Groups offers support to all people affected by the alcoholism of a loved one or friend, contact them on 1300 252 666

Beyond Blue – 1300 22 4636, 24/7. Chat online or email. Beyond Blue aims to increase awareness of depression and anxiety and reduce stigma.

Blue Knot Foundation Helpline – 1300 657 380, Monday – Sunday between 9am – 5pm AEST or via email [email protected]. The Blue Knot Foundation is the National Centre of Excellence for Complex Trauma. It provides support, education and resources for the families and communities of adult survivors of childhood trauma and abuse.

Butterfly Foundation’s National Helpline – 1800 33 4673, 8am-midnight AEST  7 days a week, chat online or email. This is a free, confidential service that provides information, counselling and treatment referral for people with eating disorders, and body image and related issues.

eheadspace – 1800 650 890, 9am – 1am AEST / 7 days a week, chat online or email. Provides free online and telephone support and counselling to young people 12 – 25 and their families and friends.

1800RESPECT – 1800 737 732. This is a 24-hour national sexual assault, family and domestic violence counselling line for any Australian who has experienced, or is at risk of, family and domestic violence and/or sexual assault.

National Debt Helpline, Australia. If you feel overwhelmed by debt, you have options and there are steps you can take yourself. If you feel you need guidance or need help quickly, call 1800 007 007

Elder Abuse Helpline–1800 353 374 – Free information and support services for people who experience or witness the abuse of an older person.  Operating hours vary.

Family Drug Support Australia has a free-phone support line that offers a listening ear and guidance on support services available for families affected by alcohol and other drug issues. 1300 368 186. The line is answered 24 7.

FriendLine – 1800 424 287. Supports anyone who’s feeling lonely, needs to reconnect or just wants a chat. You can call them 7 days a week or chat online with one of their trained volunteers. All conversations with FriendLine are anonymous.

Griefline – 1300 845 745 – is a national not-for-profit organisation that offers a free helpline on  as well as online forums and support groups for people experiencing grief.

Kids Helpline – 1800 55 1800. Australia’s only free 24/7 confidential and private counselling service specifically for children and young people aged 5 – 25.

Lifeline – 13 11 14, text on 0477 13 11 14 (12pm to midnight AEST) or chat online. Provides 24-hour crisis counselling, support groups and suicide prevention services.

MensLine Australia – 1300 78 99 78, 24 hours/7 days a week, chat online or organise a video chat. MensLine is a professional telephone and online counselling service offering support to Australian men.

Men’s referral service – Advice for men about family violence -1300 766 491 – Worried about your behaviour? It takes a lot of strength to acknowledge that things may not be right. This service helps men find out what some of the next steps may be, and what the journey to becoming your best self can include.

MindSpot – 1800 61 44 34. A free telephone and online service for people with anxiety, stress, low mood or depression. It provides online assessment and treatment for anxiety and depression. MindSpot is not an emergency or instant response service.

National Debt Helpline –1800 007 007 – offering help for those struggling with debt and looking for solutions.

PANDA (Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia) – 1300 726 306, 9am – 7:30pm AEST (Mon-Fri). Supports women, men and families across Australia affected by anxiety and depression during pregnancy and in the first year of parenthood.

QLife – 1800 184 527, 3pm – 12am (midnight) AEST/7 days a week. Provides nationwide telephone and web-based services for lesbian peer support and referral for people wanting to talk about a range of issues including sexuality, identity, gender, bodies, feelings or relationships.

RESPECT – National domestic, family and sexual violence counselling service – 1800 737 732 – Support via trained counsellors who who will listen and provide support in what feels right for the individual and their situation.

SANE Australia – 1800 18 7263, 10am – 10pm AEST (Mon – Fri), or chat online. Provides support to anyone in Australia affected by complex mental health issues, as well as their friends, family members and health professionals.

Open Arms — Veterans and Families Counselling – 1800 011 046 24/7 for free and confidential counselling to anyone who has served at least one day in the ADF, their partners and families.

13 YARN – Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders support – call 13 92 76 – crisis support 24/7 provides a confidential, culturally safe space to yarn about needs, worries or concerns. Support is via Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander counsellors who will understand and value knowing HOW to listen, without judgement or shame.

New Zealand+

Family Drug Support Aotearoa New Zealand has a free-phone support line that offers a listening ear and guidance on support services available for families affected by alcohol and other drug issues. 0800 337 877. The line is answered 9-3pm weekdays or request a callback outside of these times.

Hope for Wellness Help Line –1-855-242-3310 (toll-free) or connect to the online Hope for Wellness chat. Available to all Indigenous peoples across Canada who need immediate crisis intervention. Experienced and culturally sensitive helpline counsellors can help if you want to talk or are distressed. Telephone and online counselling are available in English and French. On request, telephone counselling is also available in Cree, Ojibway and Inuktitut.

Germany+

HSE mental health and support services – this site provides links to a range of mental health services across Ireland, including free online(MyMind), telephone(Samaritans – Freephone 116 123), or in person counselling(National Counselling Service.  If you are in crisis or know someone who is about to harm themselves or others, then Call 999 or 112.

Mongolia+

Emergency Medical Services — For immediate emergency assistance, call 105, available 24/7.

Mental Health Hotline – Call: 1800-2000. The Mental Health Hotline offers 24/7 confidential support for individuals experiencing distress or crisis.

National Centre for Mental Health – Provides mental health services and resources. Visit ncmh.gov.mn

Domestic Violence Support Centres – The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) supports 17 centres across Mongolia, offering accommodations, health care, psychosocial counselling, protection services, and basic legal guidance to women experiencing violence. Philippines+

Emergency Medical Services — 117

In Touch Community Services – a leading provider of Mental Health Services in the Philippines. Established in 1980, it is a volunteer-driven organization dedicated to promoting mental health and offering care and treatment to persons suffering from mental and emotional distress.

Mental Health First Response – takes self-referrals from anyone who is needing emotional or peer support, matching you with a Mental Health First Responder volunteer. This is a FREE service, courtesy of MHFR volunteers.

Crisis Hotlines – If you’re looking for free and quick mental health support, helplines can be a great option. In Philippines, free crisis counselling support is available from 5 hotlines and helplines, offering support that is confidential and in some cases, available 24/7. Depending on the helpline, support may be offered over the phone, by text message or via online chat.
