Top Up Together. Mental Health Awareness Week 2025 resources

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re invited to reconnect – with others, with ourselves, and with the small, meaningful actions that sustain us.

The 2025 theme, Top Up Together, reminds us that wellbeing isn’t something we’re meant to carry alone. It’s built in connection – in cups of tea shared without agenda, in learning side by side, in quiet support during hard days, and in the joy that comes from being seen and heard in a world that often rushes past.

We don’t need grand solutions – we need consistent, human moments of care. This theme aligns beautifully with that belief. It acknowledges that healing, resilience, and mental health are strengthened through community. Whether it’s a neighbour offering kai (food), a colleague checking in, or a shared walk that turns into a space for real kōrero (conversation) – these are the ways we top up together.

The Five Ways to Wellbeing give us a practical, evidence-backed framework:

  • Connect – because we are wired for belonging.
  • Give – because generosity reminds us of our shared humanity.
  • Take notice – because presence anchors us.
  • Keep learning – because curiosity opens us to growth.
  • Be active – because movement supports both body and mind.

But these aren’t tasks to tick off. They’re invitations. Invitations to weave wellbeing into the everyday – not perfectly, but meaningfully.

Some of the most powerful moments in life – and in the lives of those we support – they often began with someone showing up. Just that. No fixing, no pressure, just presence. Topping up, together.

Research reinforces what many of us already know in our bones: wellbeing grows when it’s shared. Volunteering, group learning, physical activity, cultural practices, and community events have lasting impacts. Not only do they help individuals feel better, but they also create more connected, resilient communities.

So maybe this week is a good time to pause and ask:

  • What fills your cup?
  • Who are your people?
  • How can you reach out, gently, to offer or receive a little top-up?

Whether it’s a kind word, a shared laugh, or a small act of giving – these are the threads that hold us. And in a world that can feel fractured, choosing to top up together is a quietly radical act of hope.

Ngā mihi nui for being part of this community.
